THE SURVIVAL REVOLUTION - THE KAYAPO IDENTITY
The Kayapo are one of the main native groups that remain in the rain forest around the Amazon River in Brazil. The Kayapo continue to resist assimilation, colonization and absorption into the dominant culture. They are known traditionally to be fierce warriors in protection of their land and livelihood. Their values system and economy is interwoven within their relationship to the rainforest, in the defense of its ecological integrity - not the destruction of it. By standing in the way of development, they naturally become a target. The warrior ancestors of today's Kayapo people work almost constantly, using whatever force necessary, to keep logging, mining, roads and political pressures at bay in an area surrounded by development.
