GREENLAND - SAVING THE SLED DOG CULTURE

Sled dog culture is at risk of extinction. A steady decline in the number of active sled drivers and a heavy reduction in the number of sled dogs is a fact of life among the indigenous people of the Arctic. Thousands of years of knowledge about the sled dog and its adaptation to regional ice conditions and landscapes have been lost as well as the relationship that exists between the people, the weather, the sea ice, the mountains, the tundra and the wind. To gain an overview of the current situation and with the idea of an exchange of knowledge, NEBULA arranged an international dog sledding seminar in the West Greenland town of Sisimiut in November/December 2016 with Inupiaq peoples representing countries and indigenous territories throughout Russia, the United States, Canada, Nunavut and Greenland. Each territory built a traditional dog sled represented of their local area to exhibit in the Sisiumuit Musume of History. Read more here.
